The Brief
Halcyon is a concept all-day bar & brunch spot — a certification-practice project that required both a logo identity and a full menu system. The target guest is 18–33: mindful about what they eat in the morning, but still out looking for a cocktail and a deal at night — someone who wants a brand and a menu that feel current, not dated.
The Challenge
An all-day bar has to hold two different moods in one identity: quiet brunch coffee in the morning, cocktails and Happy Hour at night. The name points at the answer — Halcyon means calm, peaceful — but the system still had to read as an actual bar, not a wellness brand borrowing the word.
My Approach
The identity runs on a graduated blue palette instead of the loud citrus or neon tones typical of bar branding — closer to a hazy afternoon sky than a nightclub sign. Several hand-lettered and script treatments were tested for the wordmark before landing on a rounded, even-weight display face — the softer read carries the calm the name promises without slipping into a twee wellness-brand script. The name itself supplied the icon: halcyon comes from the Greek myth of Alcyone, the kingfisher said to calm the sea — so the mark isn't a generic bar icon borrowed from the category, it's the bird the name is actually about. The menu is treated as its own design problem on top of that: each section — Coffee & Tea, Brunch Bites, All-Day Bites, Beers & Wines — is built as its own modular block with its own internal alignment rhythm, rather than one rigid grid forcing every category into the same shape.

Identity System
The system runs on a few interlocking pieces rather than one fixed lockup. The wordmark "HALCYON" is set in Achiko Regular — rounded and approachable, chosen after testing several script and hand-lettered alternatives that read too soft or too decorative for a bar. It pairs with the tagline "Serenity in every sip," a line-drawn kingfisher (the halcyon bird itself) as the brand's illustrated mark, and a simplified "A" icon built from the wordmark's own letterforms for use anywhere the full wordmark won't fit — a door decal, an app icon, a favicon. The palette runs from a soft sky blue to a pale powder blue and a deeper anchor blue — light enough for a daytime brunch card, saturated enough to hold its own on a dark storefront at night.

Menu System
A single folded, print-ready menu covering the full day — Coffee & Tea, Brunch Bites, All-Day Bites, and Beers & Wines — plus a separate Happy Hour insert card for the bar side of the concept. Each section is set as its own text block with its own tab-based price alignment: a deliberate choice to let every category read as a distinct, self-contained module on the page rather than one continuous price column running top to bottom.

Typography System
Category headers (COFFEE & TEA, BRUNCH BITES, and so on) are set in Abolition, a tall condensed display face that gives each section a clear visual anchor on the page. Item names, descriptions, and pricing run in Minion Pro — a classic serif chosen for legibility at small sizes, with a more editorial, less fast-casual feel than a standard sans. The wordmark itself went through several rounds of trial lettering before settling on Achiko — the version that read calm without reading twee.

Outcome
A complete identity and print-ready menu system for an all-day concept, built to hold together across two different dayparts and two different moods — from a quiet brunch coffee order to a Happy Hour cocktail list, and out onto the storefront itself — through one consistent palette, wordmark, kingfisher mark, and typographic system.
